With a progressive horticulture and grounds program at the University of Arkansas-Ft. Smith, the University set a goal of understanding and managing their urban forest asset.  The University contracted with Cross Timbers to conduct a campus tree inventory to locate, identify and describe each tree.

The information was compiled into a geographic information system (GIS) that is compatible with the University’s infrastructure mapping.  In addition, GIS students received practical exposure to global positioning system (GPS) work in an urban setting by working with our foresters on the inventory.  This project provided real-world application of various cutting-edge GPS equipment and inventory methods, allowing for creative solutions in the field.  The University of Arkansas-Ft. Smith inventory was a cooperative project of the University, Cross Timbers Forestry and the Arkansas Forestry Commission.
